Our Coaches

Each member of the Elite SF City Slam coaching staff brings years of experience and hard-earned expertise to the table. Our coaches are truly leaders and servants within their communities. Their guidance is rooted in talent, swagger, and years of nationally/internationally acclaimed success. This coaching staff brought the SF City Slam Team to Finals at the 2009 National Poetry Slam, and their brilliance was a large part of that victory.

Mona Webb (Slaminatrix, Head Coach)

Mona Webb is a poet, performer, actor, playwright, and producer.  In ’06, after many years of co-hosting the legendary Baton Rouge slam, Mona Webb moved to the Bay Area to study Theater at New College.  She quickly integrated into the local slam scene and become the San Francisco Slaminatrix and coach of the SF Slam Team, which placed 3rd in the nation at the 2009 National Poetry Slam.  Director of the SF Chapter of the youth literacy program Lyrical Minded, she hosts open mics, produces plays, and performs regularly around the Bay Area.

Jaylee Alde (Coach)

Jaylee Alde is a member of the Pinoy Spoken Word collective Proletariat Bronze based in Oakland, CA. His confessional style, a tangle of intricate writing and intense delivery, placed him 2nd in the nation at the 2004 National Poetry Slam. When he’s not writing, he’s thinking about it.

Kim Johnson (Coach)

After six years on the slam poetry and spoken word circuit. Kim has been a member of several slam teams and toured the US many times over, performing at slam venues, clubs, colleges and festivals. In 2009, she finished in the top ten at the Individual World Poetry Slam competition and completed her first European poetry tour with performances in Germany, Spain, Austria and The Netherlands. She was the co-coach of the 2010 San Francisco Slam team ranked third in the nation. A poet mentor for both Youth Speaks San Francisco and Lyrical Minded. Kim teaches writing and performance workshops at high schools and title one neglected schools, group homes and mental health facilities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
